The History of Albany Community Care Centre

Following a series of meetings throughout the Great Southern region during 1985 and 1986 a need for support services for the frail aged and younger people with disabilities was identified.  A member of the Lions Club of Albany, Mr Bill reside, presented these concerns to the club and a project to provide day respite was decided - and he concept of the Albany community Care Centre was born!

Fundraising within the community and submissions for government funding resulted in the purchase of the old Baptist church in Aberdeen Street.  A volunteer board of Management was formed consisting of members of the Lions Club of Albany and other community representatives.

In April 1987 the Centre officially opened 3 days per week with 10 clients, 5 part-time staff, about 10 volunteers, and a bus for transport.  We now operate from a purpose built centre on Hardie Road; have 5 buses and 2 support cars; provide Community Based Day centre 6 days per week; centre based meals 5 days per week; a Transport service 7 days per week, as well as a variety of services in the community.  Community services include Home Maintenance; domestic Assistance; Social Support and in-home Carer Respite.  We now have a client base of over 650 clients plus carers and have 46 full time and part time staff members.

Our Story

• 1987: Lions Club Albany purchased the old Baptist Church in Aberdeen Street with funds raised.  Service commenced with 30 clients,  3 days a week, 4 part time staff and a team of volunteers;
• 2001: Facility in Aberdeen Street was upgraded.  The new building was fully paid off by the time it was opened;
• 2007: We had 600 clients, 6 days a week, with a team of 46 staff and 30 volunteers;
• 2007: We set a new goal for the development of a short term respite facility.
• 2009: Building of the new respite home begins
• 2010: Short term respite home opens
